Powering Offshore Wind for Biodiversity Net Gain

We are pleased to share GINGR’s latest White Paper, Road Map for Biodiversity Net Gain in the Offshore Renewables Sector, developed in collaboration with The Biodiversity Consultancy.

As offshore wind scales rapidly to meet climate targets, this paper makes a clear case: the energy transition must not only avoid harm, but actively contribute to restoring marine ecosystems. Moving beyond No Net Loss, it outlines how Biodiversity Net Gain can become a practical and achievable goal across the sector.

The paper provides a structured roadmap - from setting baselines and defining measurable indicators, to implementing monitoring, adaptive management, and transparent reporting. It also highlights tangible, real-world interventions, including habitat restoration, nature-inclusive design, and targeted actions to support marine species.

Crucially, it brings together the roles of developers, policymakers, financiers, NGOs, and researchers, emphasising that collaboration is key to delivering credible, Nature- and People-Positive outcomes at scale.

This work contributes to GINGR’s broader ambition to align renewable energy expansion with biodiversity recovery and community well-being - demonstrating that offshore wind can be a driver of both climate action and ecosystem restoration.
