The Technical Working Group on Metrics (Metrics TWG) has been actively advancing its work on how the offshore wind sector can contribute to global Nature-Positive goals. Following a successful webinar in June 2025 on “Strategic Offsetting: Achieving Net Positive Impacts of Offshore Wind Energy on Seabirds”, the group is now preparing for two major international workshops in the coming weeks.

In September 2025, members of the TWG will present on opportunities and challenges for achieving marine biodiversity net gain during a dedicated session at the World Coastal Forum in Yancheng, China. This will be followed in October 2025 by a workshop at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, where the group will engage with energy companies, conservation organisations and government regulators to define principles for achieving biodiversity net gain in marine environments. Both events will provide valuable opportunities to refine the group’s work and next steps.

A central focus of the TWG is the development of an initial version of the GINGR biodiversity metrics framework for offshore wind, scheduled for release at the end of 2025. This framework will bring together key metrics and quantitative approaches that are already in use or under trial by operators, regulators, and companies. Over time, it will evolve into a practical toolbox which will offer selection criteria, monitoring and reporting guidance to help the offshore wind sector maximise its contribution to global Nature-Positive outcomes.

The forthcoming discussion paper will highlight both challenges and opportunities in delivering biodiversity net gain at operational sites. It will compare emerging approaches, including qualitative methods developed by regulators and companies, with more traditional metrics. With biodiversity net gain targets becoming a critical driver of Nature-Positive action, the ability of offshore wind operations to measure and report progress remains a top priority for the group.

Looking ahead, the Metrics TWG will continue to host webinars to showcase innovative approaches and tools for delivering biodiversity net gain. These sessions will ensure that knowledge and lessons learned are shared widely across the sector, supporting collective progress towards Nature-Positive offshore wind development.
