Dr. Adonai Herrera-Martínez

Dr Adonai Herrera-Martínez is the Director, Environment and Sustainability at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where he leads work on environmental and social policy, sustainability impact monitoring and the mainstreaming of nature and the blue economy across the Bank’s operations. He drove the design and launch of the Blue Mediterranean Partnership – a collaborative multilateral platform bringing together partner institutions to mobilise capital for ocean sustainability – and led the development of the EBRD's 2024 Environmental and Social Policy and 2023 Approach to Nature, positioning the institution at the frontier of climate, biodiversity integration and sustainability across all sectors. He is also a board member of the Ukrainian Association of Sustainable Development Experts (ASDE) and a visiting professor on sustainable finance at the Geneva Graduate Institute and at the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) in Trieste.


From 2017 to 2019, Adonai served as Adviser to the President of the EBRD, following senior roles in the Bank’s climate change activities in Türkiye. Previously, he worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York and Dakar. He holds an MBA from INSEAD and a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Cambridge. Before moving into international development and sustainable finance, Adonai worked at CERN in Geneva, where he contributed to research on transmutation of nuclear waste in accelerator-driven systems, under the leadership of Professor Carlo Rubbia and George Charpak, Nobel Laureates in Physics in 1984 and 1992.
